Primary Data Source

HospRates uses CMS Hospital Price Transparency machine-readable files (MRF) published by hospitals as mandated by federal regulations. These files contain negotiated rates between hospitals and insurance payers for medical procedures and services.

Code Types

HospRates supports three standardized medical billing code types:

CPT (Current Procedural Terminology): Codes for medical procedures and services
HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System): Codes for equipment, supplies, and non-physician services
MS-DRG (Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups): Codes for inpatient hospital stays

Payer & Plan Coverage

The dataset includes pricing information from 80 distinct insurance payers and 231 insurance plans, covering commercial insurers, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid managed care, and other payer types.

Last Updated: January 2026
Hospital price transparency files are typically updated annually or semi-annually. We monitor hospital websites for new file releases and update our dataset accordingly.
